The 22-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract, has played 63 games for the Reds since joining in 2019. But he was loaned to League One Ipswich Town in January then took a break from football for mental health reasons.

The Reds have an option to recall Thomas in January.

He will link up with Joey Barton whose Gas side were relegated last season.

Meanwhile, four under 23s players have been loaned until December 31 to Danish second division club Efsbjerg which is owned by the Reds owners.

They are Jordan Helliwell, Steven Simpson, Charlie Winfield and Matty Wolfe.

Midfielder Wolfe has played one league game for the Reds - the final home match of last season against Nottingham Forest - while right-back Helliwell played only in the EFL Trophy in 2018.

Canadian striker Simpson and left wing-back Charlie Winfield have never played for the first team.
