A YOUNG ice skater from Barnsley is set to take to the international stage after wowing judges at the British Figure Skating Championships.

Isla Shenton, 12, from Pogmoor, has been ice skating since she was just five years old and has gone from strength-to-strength.

She finished third in the under-13 category at Tuesday’s event in Sheffield.

Her mum, 38-year-old Donna Shenton, said: “She had to qualify to enter the competition and so she was in the top 40 skaters in the UK.

“She placed first in the qualifier to get into the competition and she’s been competing regularly.

“She’s been doing this since she was five and she trains pretty much every day, sometimes even twice a day.

“I’m so proud of her - she thought she was only going to get a top ten placing so to get third is amazing.

“She’s going to be competing internationally sometime between now and April which is exciting and something she hasn’t done before.

“She wants to skate around the world and travel with Disney on Ice.”
