A KINGSTONE woman who has spent years looking after rescue cats and kittens has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.

Alex Butcher, 25, of St Edward’s Avenue, works as welfare team leader for Cat Protection in the Barnsley area.

She began as a foster carer before the charity asked her to take on the role, which she has been doing for three years.

“I look after the other fosterers we have, speak to vets and organise appointments - it’s all for the cats the work I do,” she said.

“It’s nice to see when they come in quite poorly, to see them go onto a new home.

“We have quite a long waiting list for new cats coming in, so where we can we try and get owners to keep them if they can do, which is also nice.”

Alex, who has been nominated in the Community Hero category, added: “It’s a bit overwhelming. I get to see a lot of people through it, and it can feel like a thankless job sometimes.

“But I’ve rescued over 100 cats in my work.”
