MORE than £50,000 worth of medicines had to be written off at Barnsley Hospital after staff failed to store them in fridges.

At a board meeting yesterday, it was revealed that a total of £57,000 worth of medicines used by the ophthalmology eye disorder department had been lost.

A spokesperson for the hospital acknowledged there had been an ‘isolated incident’ involving storage of ophthalmology medicines.

They added: “The incident was reported via the trust’s incident reporting procedures.

“As a result, additional practices have been put into place to reduce any reoccurrence, such as reduced levels of fridge medicines stock now being stored in the department.”
