CHRISTMAS spirit was clear to see in Wombwell this week after a woman dressed as Father Christmas handed out presents to children on the streets.
Julie Popplewell, 61, is well known for her fundraising exploits in Wombwell, after dressing up as the Easter bunny and handing out chocolate eggs.
On Wednesday, she walked around the area in her Santa outfit - alongside Natasha Downing, her husband Ian and Joann Harper - to spread some Christmas cheer.
She told the Chronicle: “The project’s aim is to put a smile on children’s faces at Christmas.
“We started back in lockdown with Easter eggs and handed them out to our neighbours.
“We then decided to do the same at Christmas 2020 due to the feedback we got.
“We posted on Wombwell Wise to see if people thought that a Christmas walkabout would be a good idea and we were overwhelmed with the support.
“People were messaging asking how they could donate and help and so the first year was a great success - we then decided to do it the following Christmas and so on.”
Julie has received almost 1,000 donations for this year’s event - and has praised those who have been involved.
“We have nearly 900 selection boxes and gifts that we’ve been able to purchase thanks to donations.
“I’d like to say thanks to the parents and residents of Wombwell and the surrounding areas.
“A big thanks also goes to Little George, the Prince of Wales, Locky’s Bar, the Post Office and Katie’s Cafe who all kindly put donations tins out in their premises.”
