A CAMPAIGN to save the historic Grimethorpe Hall is gathering pace.

The Brierley Road building, which dates back to 1670, has been derelict for decades but work is being done by Barnsley Council and Historic England in preparation for essential repair works.

Matt Gladstone, Barnsley Council’s executive director for ‘place’, told the Chronicle: “The council continues to work closely with key stakeholders, including Historic England, to facilitate any urgent repairs needed to the building.

“Over the winter, this has involved site visits by Historic England and their surveyors to decide what the priorities are and to estimate total costs.

“This is an important step and these reports needs to be completed before physical work at the site can begin.”
