THE plight of a little girl who is set to fly out to America for lifesaving cancer treatment has brought her local community together after a fundraising day raised almost £3,000 to help towards travel costs.
The money will ensure six-year-old Alyssa Reece and her family, from Cudworth, will be able to stay close to the youngster, who has rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of the disease.
Laki’s Fish Bar, on Barnsley Road, opened its doors on the last Sunday of October in order to raise cash for Alyssa and generated £2,699.35 through sales, donations and a raffle which saw prizes donated by neighbouring businesses.
Alyssa’s mum Katie said: “The cancer formed as a tumour behind her incredibly beautiful green eyes. She is currently and very bravely undergoing a gruelling chemotherapy regime, and later this month will be going to America for further treatment.
“Cancer does not just effect a child for the duration of the treatment as the chemicals used to kill this disease cause side effects that will likely effect Alyssa for the rest of her life.
“However, despite all that Alyssa is having to endure, she is still smiling.”
Georgina Ellison, who runs Laki’s, told the Chronicle Alyssa’s story has touched everyone in the local community.
“The community spirit has been amazing and everyone has pulled together for a special little girl,” she added.
“It’s overwhelming just how much we’ve all raised.”
