A LOCAL artist and art gallery owner has organised a re-enactment of the most famous ballerina Anna Pavlova dancing for King George V at Wentworth Woodhouse so he can create a painting of the scene.

Shaun Rowley, owner of the Newburgh Gallery on Dodworth Road, is a member of The Collectiv, a collection of local artists who work to produce art which reflects their passion for local history and heritage.

Shaun was fascinated by the story of Pavlova dancing in the marble saloon at the great house in 1912, and wanted to create a painting to be included in an exhibition the group is staging there later this year.

Shaun recruited dancer and dance teacher Fay Cordelia Lowe to recreate the scene and take photographs from which he can work to create his painting.

“The common thread that runs through our work is a deep belief that the visual arts matter and that our local area should be celebrated,” said Shaun, 44, of Vernon Road, Worsbrough.

“I wanted to use this as an opportunity to create an original piece of work that will be the centrepiece of my contribution towards the exhibition.

“The exhibition at Wentworth Woodhouse will be bespoke, inspired by and relating to the house and its history, and the surrounding area and countryside.”

The exhibition will open at the end of April and run until June.
