A BARNSLEY school’s brass band is set to appear on television next week.
Birkwood Primary School Brass Ensemble, from Cudworth, will be featured when BBC Look North visits their practice session at The Acorn Centre, Grimethorpe, on Thursday.
Headteacher Julie Allen said: “We are passionate in supporting the arts and our local heritage. Four years ago we contacted Grimethorpe Colliery Band to ask if they would play at our school, which they did, and it inspired a number of our children to want to play a brass instrument.
“Roger Webster, principle cornet player with Grimethorpe, has been a key person in supporting our children and Michael Dodd, who played euphonium, now tutors our children.
“They are at an exceptional level for ten and 11-year-olds and it led them to be invited to play with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band at their 100-year anniversary concert at Elsecar Heritage Centre in October last year.”
