Barnsley are a win away from promotion after a 2-1 success over Blackpool which completed an unbeaten league season at Oakwell.

The visitors took the lead after a quarter of an hour then Cauley Woodrow levelled before the break and Liam Lindsay’s first League One goal of the season secured the win.

Portsmouth drew 1-1 at Sunderland, which leaves third-placed Pompey four points behind the Reds while fourth-placed Sunderland are six behind. Both sides have games in hand on Tuesday but will be not be able to catch Barnsley as long as Daniel Stendel’s side win at Bristol Rovers on the final day.  If both fail to win in midweek, the Reds will be promoted with a game to spare.

The Reds could also win the title after drawing level on points with Luton Town who lost 2-1 at Burton Albion, but still have a better goal difference by four.

Daniel Stendel kept the team which won 3-0 at Plymouth Argyle on Monday and they finished their home campaign with 15 wins and eight draws from 23 games.

After a quiet start to the game, the visitors took the lead on 15 minutes. A cross from the right was cleverly nudged on by Armand Gnanduillet to Harry Pritchard whose 15-yard shot from the left of the box took a large deflection and nestled in the bottom left corner.

Barnsley responded very well to going behind and were well on top for the remainder of the first half.  Mamadou Thiam missed a huge change to level just three minutes later when he headed Jordan Williams’ cross over the bar five yards out in a central position.

Ethan Pinnock headed one of several early Cameron McGeehan corners wide well while, at the other end, Gnanduillet dragged a low shot well off-target in the box. McGeehan then fired a 22-yard shot just wide of the bottom left corner after a clever pass by Mike Bahre before Blackpool’s Ben Heneghan headed well over the bar.

Thiam then missed a superb chance when Alex Mowatt’s excellent 40-yard pass put him clean through on goal on the left of the box but goalkeeper Christopher Mafoumbi produced a good one-on-one save.

Barnsley eventually levelled on 39 minutes when, after a long passing move down the left wing, the ball fell to Woodrow just outside the box and he turned before shooting into the bottom left corner from 20 yards for his 19th goal of the season.

The Reds were dealt a blow just before half-time when Jacob Brown was brought off with an injury and replaced by Kieffer Moore. That meant Bahre moved from behind the striker to right wing and Moore joined Woodrow up front.

Thiam volleyed a difficult chance over the bar from just inside the box in first half injury-time but Barnsley went in at the break having been the better team.

Early in the second half, Bahre headed a Mowatt cross just over the bar from eight yards out then Thiam forced Mafoumbi into another good save as he clawed a 25-yard shot out of his top left corner.

The Reds took the lead just before the hour-mark when Lindsay headed in McGeehan’s impressive left-sided corner at the near post five yards out.

Woodrow then had two excellent chances to make it 3-1, firing wide on the turn inside the box from Thiam’s low left-wing cross then blazing over on the right of the box after Blackpool lost the ball deep in their half.

Blackpool’s Pritchard tried to score his second of the match when a corner was cleared to him on 75 minutes but his 20-yard shot lacked power and Davies saved with ease.

Moore then produced an incredible miss with ten minutes remaining, volleying a McGeehan corner over the bar from four yards out with the goal gaping and no one marking him.
