Barnsley came from behind to beat lowly visitors Rochdale 2-1 and stretch their unbeaten run to eight games.

Dale took the lead early in the second half but top-scorer Kieffer Moore levelled within four minutes then Cauley Woodrow won it with a quarter of an hour to play.

It was an unconvincing performance from the Reds but a huge win as they remain unbeaten in 18 league games at Oakwell across more than ten months, winning the last four.

Barnsley have won their last three League One games and are now third in the table, two points behind second-placed Portsmouth who were in FA Cup action and four off new leaders Luton Town who have played a game more than the Reds.

Daniel Stendel kept the same team as for the 4-1 win at AFC Wimbledon and the 3-0 home success over Bradford City, with the same bench as at Wimbledon as well.

For most of the first half, Barnsley – although they were better and more threatening than their relegation-battling visitors – struggled to get into their recent rhythm and seemed to be focused on playing long balls up to Moore who found it hard to keep it or bring others into play. When they did get forward, the hosts could not break down a resilient Rochdale defence.

Moore did have a couple of early chances as – after touching a low cross by Ben Williams but seeing the ball balloon into the goalkeeper’s arms – he blazed wide ten yards out after Mamadou Thiam’s left-wing cross was helped on by Cameron McGeehan and Jacob Brown.

Rochdale’s Rory Holden sent a 25-yard free-kick straight at Adam Davies in the home goal while Jacob Brown fired into the side netting from a very tight angle on the right of the box after one of several driving runs by Dimitri Cavare who was the most impressive player on the pitch in the first half.

The visitors had a chance to take the lead late in the first half when Liam Lindsay allowed a right-wing free-kick to reach Ryan Delaney who blazed over the bar five yards out in the six-yard box at a very tight angle.

Central midfielder Kenny Dougall came on for winger Mamadou Thiam at half-time with striker Moore moving onto the left wing in a 4-4-3 with Cauley Woodrow up front and Brown on the right.

Moore found the back of the net but was clearly offside running onto Alex Mowatt’s throughball and the goal was ruled out. Instead it was the visitors who took the lead when former Barnsley defender Jimmy McNulty’s free-kick put Ian Henderson clean through on goal and he beat Davies to find the bottom left corner.

Moore had a good chance to level minutes later but he headed Woodrow’s right-wing cross over from close range under pressure from defenders. Moore then levelled on 54 minutes with a fine finish into the bottom right corner from outside the box on the left. It was his 16th goal of the season.

Rochdale’s Calvin Andrew headed wide from a cross by former Barnsley right-back Ryan McLaughlin then Moore tried again from long-range but sent his 25-yard effort well off-target. Henderson then tried to beat Davies from a very tight angle on the right of the box but his shot was turned around the post by the goalkeeper.

Cavare’s low right-wing cross found Woodrow eight yards out but, sliding in, he put his effort straight at goalkeeper Josh Lillis. But Woodrow eventually made it 2-1.

Brown brilliantly turned a defender on the edge of the box to open up the visiting defence then he squared to Dougall who mishit his shot six yards out but it fell perfectly for Woodrow to blast in his ninth goal of the season.

Barnsley tried to make it 3-1 but Cavare fired over on the right of the box then Dougall’s 25-yard effort was well off-target. Brown should have finished Dale off when a good move saw McGeehan square the ball to him but his shot from five yards out with the goal gaping was straight at the goalkeeper who made a point blank save.

Stendel brought on new signing Jordan Green for Moore and the winger looked lively on his debut, firing wide with an effort from outside the box.

Rochdale almost levelled deep in injury-time when Davies, who appeared to be fouled, dropped a corner and McNulty’s shot was blocked on the line in a frantic goalmouth scramble.

Welcome to the Chronicle’s live coverage of Barnsley’s home game against Rochdale which is due to kick off at 3pm.
  • 13:50pm

The team news will be out at about 2pm. Barnsley are expected to keep the same side which won 4-1 at AFC Wimbledon and 3-0 at home to Bradford City in the last two games, after Cauley Woodrow recovered from the injury which forced him off in the last match. Midfielder Mike Bahre was a doubt following injury but is likely to be on the bench anyway if fit.

Two of Dale’s defence are former Barnsley players. They signed former Oakwell loanee Ryan McLaughlin this week from Blackpool to replace right-back Joe Rafferty who was sold to Preston. Centre-back Jim McNulty, 33, has recently returned to the side. Matt Done, another ex-Red, is not in the squad.
  • 14:09pm
There is a change in the home dugout today as Daniel Stendel’s assistant Andreas Winkler has moved to Premier League side Huddersfield Town. He has been replaced by former Reds player Dale Tonge who steps up from his role within the academy.
  • 14:12pm
Stendel said: “We spoke with all the coaches from the academy and and compared what we wanted. Dale’s mentality fits with us and with our squad. In this time, the supporters think all have left the club, but Tongey stands for the identity of Barnsley – he is from Barnsley and played for Barnsley.”
  • 14:16pm

A win or draw today would put Barnsley on their joint best unbeaten home league run in more than half a century. The Reds’ last league loss at home was a 2-0 beating by Millwall in the Championship on March 17, after which they have won ten and drawn seven of their 17 fixtures – including wins in their last three home games over Peterborough United, Charlton Athletic and Bradford City.
  • 14:19pm
If they avoid defeat, they will have equalled the 18-match unbeaten run of home league games in the 2005/06 promotion season under Andy Ritchie when they did not lose at Oakwell from September until the end of the season. The best run before that was 23 matches in the 1967/68 campaign while the club record is 36 in the 1930s. Jim McNulty Jim McNulty

  • 14:26pm

Barnsley are five points behind leaders Portsmouth and four off second-placed Luton Town, with a game in hand on both sides in the automatic promotion places who face each other on Tuesday.
  • 14:28pm
After a 4-1 win against League One’s lowest scorers Wimbledon on Saturday, Barnsley – who have conceded the fewest goals – now face the division’s leakiest defence.
  • 14:31pm

Rochdale have the worst defensive record in the EFL after conceding 59 goals in their 29 matches this season, almost three times the number let in by the Reds. They are 20th, a point and a place above the relegation zone.
  • 14:39pm

Dale lost five successive matches, conceding 19 and scoring three, then drew 1-1 at home to ten man Fleetwood Town on Saturday. The equaliser was netted by Ian Henderson, who is among the league’s top-scorers with 14 goals.
  • 14:40pm

Dale have conceded the most away goals in the division but their 21 netted on their travels is the best tally of any side outside the top seven.
  • 14:43pm
Rochdale boss Hill was in charge of Barnsley for a 75-game spell between the summer of 2011 and his sacking in late December 2012. He then returned to his previous club Rochdale where he has this season passed 550 games in their dugout.
  • 14:46pm

Hill said: “A lot has changed since I was at Barnsley. I love the way they have done things since Paul Heckingbottom was there and the recruitment team that they have. It’s brilliant, they spend money on players, develop them and try to sell them for more money, while getting success on the pitch. I really did enjoy working for that club, it was a great experience with good people. I am glad that they are doing well.”
  • 14:48pm

The 49-year-old won at Oakwell in his first spell with Dale, a 1-0 League Cup success in August 2010, then beat them 3-0 at Spotland in August 2015. But his other returns to Barnsley have brought five-goal defeats.
  • 14:50pm
