BARNSLEY Youth Choir has cleaned up at the European Choir Games in Latvia.

The world-renowned choir has once again triumphed on the international stage, winning both of two categories the team of 62 entered at the European Choir Games.

It makes them European champions once again in the Gospel, Spiritual, Music of Spirit and Faith category, as well as the Jazz, Pop, Show category.

But following both performances, they were also asked to compete in the prestigious additional Grand Prix of Nations contests, and won both of those too. They have also taken part in the closing ceremony.

Musical director Mat Wright said: "It was a shock to be invited to take part in the Grand Prix, because it's such a tough competition this year, and the choirs we're competing with do this virtually full time.

"I do think this is the best the choir has ever performed."

The 300-strong Barnsley Youth Choir had to be whittled down to just 62 following a rigourous audition process, and they've spent six months rehearsing intensively and raising the £50,000 needed to help pay for their ten day trip to Riga in Latvia.
