A YOUNG brass bandsman is following in his grandfather’s footsteps.

Brandon Ward, from Michael’s Estate, Grimethorpe, is part of Barnsley Metropolitan Band and in the last year, has had the chance to play with the world-famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band too.

Fifteen-year-old Brandon was inspired to pick up his cornet by his late granddad Bryan Smith, who was a tenor horn soloist with the band.

His dedication to his music has seen him nominated with a Young Champions award.

Grandmother Elsie said: “He started off in Grimethorpe District Junior Band and then Barnsley Met picked him up, as he goes to Barnsley Music Hub for lessons.

“He’s just picked it up so quickly and does ever so well. He plays at his school, Outwood Academy Shafton, for events like the armistice. And he is very involved in music at school too.

“He has played with Grimethorpe Senior Band now about four or five times in the past year, and played in their 100 year anniversary concerts for two nights.

“He is a remarkable young man for his age and seems to be well liked by older people too. He is a lovely kid and I’m not just saying that because I’m his grandma.”

Brandon’s mum Kim is the Grimethorpe Colliery Band’s librarian, so Brandon is keeping the family’s musical tradition going.

Elsie added: “He goes all over for his lesson and rehearsals and really is dedicated. His granddad certainly would be proud.”
