Penistone Church manager Ian Richards is equally delighted with his club's run of six straight wins and their record of producing young players who attract the interest of professional clubs.

Church striker Nathan Keightley is currently on trial at Barnsley and has played in a behind-closed-doors match for the under 23s.

Earlier in the season, Penistone lad Jordan Barnett was signed by the academy of Premier League Burnley while former Barnsley captain Marc Roberts and current England international John Stones both had spells with the club as youngsters.

Richards said: "Penistone Church and Penistone Grammar School have produced a lot of quality players over the years. I don't know whether it is to do with the parenting, coaching or schooling in the area but it is great.

"We can't compete with other clubs in terms of the wages we can offer, but we can attract young players by giving them a platform to show their talent and attract the attention of professional clubs. I don't get as much satisfaction out of trophies and promotion as I do out of helping young players get a chance.

"Jordan Barnett has been training with Burnley's under 23s and he still comes to watch nearly all of our home games.Nathan Keightley is doing really well at Barnsley from all reports. Hopefully he will earn a contract there but, even if he doesn't, the experience will have improved him as a player and I am sure other clubs will look at him.

"It's good that Barnsley are looking at local players and I have a good relationship with their academy manager Bobby Hassell as well as their under 18s coaches Martin Devaney and Tom Harban."

Church, who gained promotion last season, have won their last six games in all competitions and their last eight at home, a run which has taken them from the bottom five into 11th in the NCEL Premier with 30 points from 21 games.

Richards said: "It's brilliant form, especially considering we haven't had a settled squad during that run due to suspensions and injuries.I said at the start of the season that our home form would dictate how well we would do and we have won 11 of our 14 home games so far this season. I always said we wouldn't find our feet properly after promotion until October and that has proved to be the case.

"Our aim at the start of the season was to finish in the top half but now we are more ambitious and we want to get as high into the top ten as we can. We also want to retain our League Cup title and do well in the Sheffield Senior Cup."

Like most clubs, Penistone did not play on Saturday as their league game at Staveley was called off due to the freezing weather. Tomorrow they are due to host Pickering Town who are aiming for promotion and are currently fourth, but the match could be called off as the weather is expected to remain cold over the weekend.
