Danny Wilson still has no plans to bring in loan signings before next Thursday's deadline and has backed centre-backs Lewin Nyatanga and Jean Yves M'voto to improve after their harrowing debut.
The duo started together as centre-backs for the first time at Watford on Saturday and the Reds' defence was in disarray as they went 2-0 down inside 16 minutes. With Martin Cranie out for several weeks and Peter Ramage and Bobby Hassell also struggling, Wilson says he is not planning to sign anyone before next Thursday's loan deadline.
The Barnsley manager said: "We would never bring anyone in for the sake of it and, at the moment, we don't feel there is anyone out there who is better than what we have got.
"It was difficult for the centre-backs on Saturday but as a group we were poor. Martin Cranie and Peter Ramage have been very consistent and it was always going to be difficult without them. But I believe in Lewin Nyatanga and Jean Yves M'voto and hopefully they will get better as the games go on."
After his third start of a season plagued by injuries and non-selection, Nyatanga told the Chronicle: "Both me and Jean haven't played many games. I'm sure we will improve as we get more games. To let two goals in so early at any level is a terrible start. It was the worst possible start we could have made. We showed a bit of fight after that but we need to show that fight from the first minute.
"For me, it's good to be back playing. I want to stay in the side until the end of the season and put in good performances. Every player wants to play.No one wants to sit on the bench or in the stands.
"But you have to be professional and work hard and wait for your chance which is what I have done this season."
