THE council has issued advice to residents on what to do with the excess waste they have generated over Christmas.

The council’s four recycling centres now all accept old bikes which, rather than being recycled as scrap metals, will be passed on to Cycle Penistone CIC to be restored for others to enjoy.

Real Christmas trees can be taken as garden waste to any of the sites at Smithies, Worsbrough, Goldthorpe and Penistone which are open every day.

The Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster Waste Partnership is also encouraging to re-gift presents or donate unwanted items to charity.

“Barnsley’s recycling centres accept items for reuse such as bikes, working toys and furniture,” a spokesman said.

“Local charity Refurnish then collects the items and restores them for resale or use by local families.

“Artificial trees and other Christmas decorations can be given to charity shops for reuse or resale. Real Christmas trees can be taken as garden waste to any of Barnsley’s household waste recycling centres.”
