BARNSLEY’S own Harry Potter will feature at Barnsley History Day this weekend.

He wasn’t a wizard, but a member of a Barnsley family who made significant contribution to the First World War effort and served for many years as a councillor.

Local historian and author Jane Ainsworth is launching her second book, which is about the family, at Barnsley History Day on Saturday.

Keeping Their Beacons Alight: the Potter Family of Barnsley and Their Service to Our Country, focuses on the impressive military service of the Potter family and their other contribution to Barnsley in terms of business and civic service.

Out of four brothers who served in the First World War, two came home, Harry and Alan, but two were killed in action, Frank and Eddie.

Paul Stebbing, from Barnsley Archives and Local Studies, said: “As we prepare to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War, Jane’s story of the Potter family of Barnsley and their immense service to their country during both world wars makes for fascinating reading.

“The family performed so many essential roles, above and beyond the call of duty, and I’m delighted to see that contribution recognised in print.

“She has taken time to hunt down so many original sources and photographs in order to illustrate this unique account. The poignant letters from the front line take us back in time to a conflict of which those with first hand memories are no longer with us.”

The book launch will be held on Saturday from 11am to 3pm in the town hall. Jane will be joined by family members Jean Copley and Ian Potter, whose memories, memorabilia, photos and many letters have been used in the book.
