THE site of a former coking plant which employed people for more than a century could be partly retained for future employment use, the Chronicle can reveal.

Monckton coking plant, which closed in December 2014, was the subject of two public consultations in February and the site’s owners, Hargreaves, told the Chronicle this week that the public’s wishes for more employment opportunities will be taken into account when it submits plans to Barnsley Council.

The Durham-based firm unveiled an artist’s impression of how the site could look in the future at the events, with up to 450 homes being initially suggested by Hargreaves, which is in the process of demolishing the site’s main structures.

However, feedback from local councillors and the public - who urged the company to retain some form of employment use on the site - will be incorporated into the planning submission, according to Hargreaves spokesman Ian Slater.
