A CHURCH in Wath has been collecting shoe boxes filled with items that most people take for granted so that people suffering in Romania can have something to open on Christmas Day.

In just over a month, people in the community donated a total of 106 shoe boxes to the Wath All Saints Parish Church filled with everyday necessities.

The boxes were wrapped in Christmas paper and then filled with items like flannels, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hats, scarves, gloves, sweets, pens, pencils, colouring books and paper.

All of the boxes were picked up earlier on in the week by a member of the Children in Distress charity and are currently making the trip to Romania so that the boxes will get there in time for Christmas.

The boxes were donated as part of the charity’s ‘Love in a Box’ Christmas appeal which tries to ensure that infants and children from the poorest families,

orphanages, hospices and

hospitals receive a gift at Christmas.

Some of the boxes will be going to senior citizens who will be alone at Christmas to let them know that they are not forgotten.

The church has been taking part in the shoe box appeal for many years and it has become a

popular part of their annual

calendar.
