A BARNSLEY man has had his jail sentence extended following an investigation by South Yorkshire Police’s Prison Investigation Team.

Benjamin Handley was behind bars in Her Majesty's Prison Lindholme when he assaulted three prison officers.

He appeared at Sheffield Crown Court to be sentenced after pleading guilty to three counts of assault and one count of possession of an improvised weapon.

The court was told three prison officers received minor injuries during the incident, where Handley had a tin of sardines in a sock swinging it around, before spitting at officers trying to restrain him.

Handley, 30, was serving a sentence for wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm at the time of the assault.

He will now serve a further 16 months at HMP Doncaster before he is eligible for a parole hearing.
