A desire to have a right-footed and left-footed centre-back was behind Liam Lindsay being dropped from the Barnsley team for the first time on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Scottish centre-back had started all of the Reds’ last 50 league matches since making his debut in August 2017 but was named on the substitute’s bench for the game against Burton Albion which was called off. He had been replaced by right-footed Adam Jackson, to play alongside left-footed Ethan Pinnock.

Coach Andreas Winkler said: “Adam Jackson was very excited to play and to show he is not our third centre-back but he is on the same level as Liam and Ethan. It was nothing to do with Liam’s performances which are always on a high level.  But Adam Jackson did so well in training every day and he is right- footed. The gaffer wanted to show that he is an important part of the team.”

Jackson could make the first League One appearance of his career at Fleetwood Town tomorrow. For the Burton game, forward Mamadou Thiam also dropped to the bench for the first time this season while midfielder Mike Bahre was taken out of the starting line-up. George Moncur and Victor Adeboyejo – who is still yet to start a league game for the Reds – had been brought into the 11.

Winkler added: “It’s a bit of a different situation, because we already named a team for our last match. I am excited to see what our team is for Saturday.”
