Marley Watkins admits to taking a 'shocking penalty' at Scunthorpe on Tuesday night but hopes to soon start finding the goals which could put him in Barnsley's League One starting line-up.

On his full debut for the Reds, the summer signing provided a great flick for Josh Scowen who won a spot-kick but Watkins saw his effort saved by home 'keeper Joe Anyon.

"It was a shocking penalty," said Watkins, who was not required in the shoot-out which Barnsley won 7-6 to go through in the Capital One Cup.

"I need to be more clinical and missing a penalty didn't help.  I really want my first goal but the gaffer has told me to relax and that it will happen. That was the only downer on the night because I felt I showed some positives signs.  It happens and I will move on. We got the win which was the main thing."

Although Barnsley's head coach Lee Johnson described his performance as 'superb', Watkins knows he will have to be better in front of goal if he is to replace fellow strikers Conor Wilkinson and Sam Winnall who started the season up front at Chesterfield on Saturday.

"It's a really healthy competition," said the 24-year-old Welshman who signed from Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

"You have to be at it every game or someone will take your spot. You have to perform when you get your chance."

Watkins began his career in midfield but now sees himself as a striker. The former Swansea, Hereford and Bath player said: "I started as a winger but I changed last season to striker because our main striker (at Inverness) was sold.  I am really enjoying it as a striker because you have more freedom and I have goals in me.  I can do both roles, I don't mind."

Watkins admits he is naturally shy but that he has enjoyed his time at Oakwell so far. He said: "It's a good set of lads and we are playing some good stuff. I am quite introverted but they have welcomed me really well and I've enjoyed it. "I am buzzing for the Burton game (tomorrow) and to play in front of some good fans. We have quality and, on our day, we can bop anyone."
