MOUNT Vernon Hospital is expected to close this year, the Chronicle has learned.

The hospital, which provides services including rehabilitation of elderly people so they can return to their homes, needs significant modernisation and the site has been earmarked for housing in the council’s local plan.

A nurse told the Chronicle staff had been told last week ‘it is closing’, and while South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust which runs the hospital said ‘no final decisions had been made’, union official Tony Wright told the Chronicle yesterday he would be shocked if it didn’t close.

“We’ve been told it’s a very strong possibility,” said Mr Wright, chairman of Unison’s SWYPFT branch.
