Stars of Barnsley’s under 23s side such as Elliot Simoes and Clarke Oduor could feature under Adam Murray.

The duo both pressed their cases for involvement in the first team with doubles in the under 23s’ 5-2 win over Birmingham City. Oduor, 20, who has been used as a central midfielder after previous playing at left-back, has been on the first team bench this season without making his debut after joining from Leeds United in August.

Simoes, who is yet to feature in a first team squad after joining in January from FC United of Manchester, now has eight goals this season for the under 23s. The Portugal-born 19-year-old can play up front or on the wing.

Murray, who has stepped up to first team caretaker after being under 18s coach, watched the under 23s’ match.  Asked if some of that team’s top players could feature tomorrow against Swansea City, he told the Chronicle: “100 per cent.

“The club has a philosophy and DNA of giving young people a chance. We have some really good players at this club and it’s just an opportunity that they need. Whether I am here for just a few days or longer, they will get that opportunity with me.”
