AMBITIOUS plans to re-open Royston’s forgotten railway station and provide a rail link to Leeds and Sheffield could go ahead - but only if it secures the public’s support.

Coun Malcolm Clements told last Thursday’s North East Area Council meeting at Barnsley Town Hall that the idea could get off the ground, if it is backed by local residents, and he has urged them to play a vital role in bringing rail travel back to the area after it was cut off almost 50 years ago.

The village - which had its own four-platform station from 1841 until its closure in 1968 - still has an operation line but it is only used for freight trains to deliver sand to Ardagh Glass in nearby Monk Bretton.

Coun Clements, who is a rail enthusiast, told the Chronicle there is hope that passenger trains could return to serve the village in the future and said that its remaining rail infrastructure was a ‘major bonus’ going forward which would considerably cut costs for the project.
