Barnsley were denied victory in their final home game of the season as Burton Albion hit back to draw 1-1.

Burton Albion substitute Luke Varney netted a second half leveller to rule out George Moncur's first half strike.

Paul Heckingbottom reshuffled his defence with Adam Jackson in for the injured Marc Roberts and Callum Elder starting at left back with Gethin Jones moved to the right.

Moncur had an early shot for Barnsley before Michael Kightly scuffed an effort at the other end when put through the left side of the box.

Jackson Irvine, similarly, chose the wrong option when he was well placed.

The Aussie came much closer when he met Kightly's corner powerfully.

Barnsley went ahead when they produced their first bit of quality on 38 minutes.

They worked the ball down the left hand side of the box before the ball found Moncur who finished into the corner after composing himself.

Barnsley looked intent on doubling their lead early in the second period with Tom Bradshaw turning and shooting a powerful strike straight at Stephen Bywater.

Angus MacDonald then forced Bywater into tipping an acrobatic effort behind for a corner.

But Burton levelled on 52 minutes with substitute Varney heading in just moments after coming onto the pitch.

Varney continued to look dangerous for the visitors and had a shot deflected towards Adam Davies and also tested the Barnsley 'keeper after latching on to a long ball.

Kent then wriggled free of two challenges smartly before firing just over the top.

Barnsley were only inches away from a winner when Elder's cross was turned just wide by Burton defender Kyle McFadzean.

Content with the point they needed to secure Championship survival, Burton sat back for the final 15 minutes and Barnsley could not find a decisive second.
