The first details of Barnsley's pre-season schedule have been released and they will have a first meeting with rising club Salford City as well as hosting a Yorkshire derby against a former skipper.

The Reds will begin their pre-season preparations under new head coach Daniel Stendel with a trip to Evo-Stik outfit Gainsborough Trinity on July 7.

They then head to National League North York City on July 10 for a 7pm kick off.

Next up will be the trip to Salford on Saturday July 14.

The National League club, partly owned by Manchester United's 'Class of 92' players Phil and Gary Neville, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, have rocketed up the football pyramid in recent years.

Barnsley will also head off on a week-long pre-season training camp although a location has yet to be settled upon.

Last season the club visited Hungary for a week before their first match against Guiseley.

The only fixture at Oakwell currently secured will be against Championship side Hull City on Saturday July 28.

Barnsley sold club captain Angus MacDonald to The Tigers in January with the 25-year-old helping them to secure their Championship status.

It's a repeat of the fixture from two seasons ago where Barnsley drew 2-2.

Last season Barnsley hosted Premier League Huddersfield Town and Coventry City.

More fixtures are due to be released at a later date.

The League One fixture list will be revealed on June 21 with Barnsley set to start their campaign on August 4. Barnsley's players are expected back on June 25 for pre-season training.

The Reds have offered new contracts to six academy youngsters in Jack Walton, Ben Williams, Will Smith, Amir Berkovits, Louis Wardle and Cameron Simpson.

Goalkeeper Walton, who played the final three games of the season, is understood to be the closest to extending his stay.
