Gary Gardner believes Barnsley's derby success over Sheffield United will only be meaningful if it is followed up by victory at Ipswich Town on Tuesday which could take the Reds out of the relegation zone.

The midfielder opened the scoring before the visitors went 2-1 in front then Oliver McBurnie and Tom Bradshaw secured the win. Gardner said: "We definitely felt better after winning. We have had some good performances in the last few weeks and we deserved the win. We showed great character to come back from 2-1 down. We need that for rest of the season.

"It's a step in the right direction. There's a lot of work still to do. It doesn't stop here. We said in the dressing room that we have to go and win at Ipswich on Tuesday. This win won't mean anything if we don't build on it. They are all cup finals now and we have to win as many as possible."

It was Barnsley's first win in 12 home games since November. Gardner said: "The fans have been with us all season. It was nice for them to enjoy it."

Gardner's goal was his first for the club and an excellent 20-yard strike into the top right corner. He said: "It was a good feeling and it was about time. I have had a few efforts and they have not been good enough but that was more like me. It's gone in the top bin. I just try every game to do my best and if there is a shot on goal that I can have then I will have a go."
