The Metrodome once again hosted some of the biggest names in the sport this week and also saw history made as there were more female referees than male at a World Snooker event for the first time.

Six of the ten officials for the China Open qualifiers, which ran from Sunday until Tuesday, were women including three from Bulgaria.

A World Snooker spokesman said: ""We have some fantastic referees coming through, both male and female, and we are always keen to give those with the right ability the chance to work on our events. Snooker is very much a sport which is open to all, both in terms of playing and refereeing."

Meanwhile, Neil Robertson, Mark Williams and John Higgins all made it through while the most high-profile clash saw 2015 world champion Stuart Bingham defeat veteran Jimmy White.

There was an upset as former World Championship finalist and double China Open winner Judd Trump, currently number three in the world, lost 6-5 to number 85 Jak Jones.

The Metrodome's Richards Bailey said: "It has been great. January is usually a quiet month for us so to host a top class sport event has been a cure for the January blues.

"It has been another fantastic opportunity for the people of Barnsley to see some of the biggest names in snooker for free."

October's English Open was the first major event at the Metrodome, and World Snooker hinted that it could return but they have now decided to take it to a southern venue for 2018.

Bailey said: "They are trying to spread it around the north and south. But the feedback we have had has been absolutely fantastic and we would love to host the English Open again in the future."
