Manchester United fan Luke Steele says he won’t be scared of David Silva or Carlos Tevez when he leads Barnsley out at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium.

The Reds goalkeeper and captain says the only man to ever strike fear into him on a football pitch was Newcastle and England legend Alan Shearer.

“I was 19 and playing for Coventry in the FA Cup,” Steele told the Chronicle.

“I don’t know why but Alan Shearer terrified me. I never normally think along those lines but there was something about him that scared me.

“He scored a deflected goal and we lost 3-1 but things went quite well for me that day on a personal note.”

Steele, who made his Barnsley debut in the 2-1 FA Cup win over Liverpool at Anfield, signed for Manchester United as a teenager and understands all about the rivalry between the two Manchester clubs. He said: “My dad’s from Manchester and I remember going to a derby when United won 5-0. Eric Cantona scored and Andrei Kanchelskis bagged a hat-trick.”

Steele has great memories of the FA Cup and is determined to help the Reds to the semi-finals again.

“I hate the talk of people not taking the FA Cup seriously,” he said.

“I can understand the need for squad rotation when there’s a lot of games but it’s a professional competition that has been around for more than 100 years and it’s so special. I’ve had the privilege of getting to the semi-finals before and I want to do that again and maybe even better it. Why not?”
