From the little Ivan Toney has seen of Barnsley so far, he cannot believe they are in the midst of a seven-game League One losing streak.

The teenage frontman signed a 28-day loan from Newcastle United on Monday and made his debut a day later as Barnsley defeated York City in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Toney, 19, who played for 83 minutes against York, feels the Reds should be higher than they currently are.

He told the Chronicle: "I'd like to try and turn things around. Barnsley are a great club and should be doing much better.   They have not got the results they would have wanted recently but they are a good side and I don't know how they have not been getting them (good results).

"But that's football. I think there is fire in everyone's belly. I think they're a great side and they play great football. I thought this was the best option for me."

Toney impressed as a youngster with Northampton and earned a summer move to Newcastle. He has played in the Premier League against Chelsea this season and has more than 50 first team appearances under his belt.

He added: "I'm just going to play the same football that I normally play, be positive, and hopefully the results will come our way. Hopefully my goals can help turn this run around. We had a great start on Tuesday and we want to kick on against Port Vale. Hopefully we can go on a run now and win a few games.

"I want to be playing football and I couldn't say no to Barnsley.  I hope to bring a lot of positivity to the team and spice it up a bit. Lee Johnson said of Toney: We have brought him in as a short-term fix but I don't think it would be impossible to keep him for longer."
