AN 83-year-old woman was seriously injured when five tonnes of steel fell off the back of a lorry into the path of an oncoming car.

The Vauxhall Astra was forced off the Woodhead Pass and rolled down a verge after colliding with the steel roll.

It landed on its roof in a gully trapping three passengers inside. The elderly woman, a rear seat passenger from Stockport, was most badly injured and was taken to Barnsley Hospital. The male driver, 58, and front-seat passenger, a 37-year-old woman, both from Skegness, suffered cuts and bruises.

The flat-back lorry was travelling towards Manchester on the A628 when it shed its load near the junction with Windle Edge at about 4.45pm on Monday. The collision caused the road to be closed for two hours. It was partially opened at 6.30pm to ease congestion but did not open fully until about 10pm.

Investigations are continuing. Witnesses should contact police on 0114 2202970.
