A TOWN centre shoe shop will close its doors for the last time tomorrow after 60 years of trading.
David and Meryl Hamby originally opened their business as a credit drapery in 1962, before they opened Hamby’s Boot and Shoe Merchants on Shambles Street in 1979.
They later relocated to Albert Street in 1992 and have built up a loyal customer base.
Chris Hamby, 57, from Dodworth, started working Saturdays and school holidays with the family business when he was just nine years old - and he’s been in the footwear business for almost 50 years.
He said: “I’m sad to see it go but retail has changed.
“The last couple of years with Covid hasn’t helped but times change and we only have happy memories of being here in Barnsley.
“We’re very sorry to be letting down our regular customers but we’re not bitter - we’re very happy.”
We have been at the heart of our community, every week, since 1858. The town and its people have changed dramatically since then but the Chronicle has been a constant.
