A PROLIFIC shoplifter has been jailed just weeks after being handed a suspended prison sentence for stealing and carrying ‘improvised weapons’ in the town centre.
Jamie Gotobed, 35, of Portland Street, was handed a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 24 months at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court.
The crimes, which he committed in May, included £1,344 in clothing from Sports Direct on May 24, £915 from the same store the next day, and £280 of cosmetics from Boots on May 28.
He was also stopped in the town centre on May 13 carrying a number of homemade weapons - including a stick with screws in it and a belt wrapped with shards of glass.
However less than a month after avoiding jail, Gotobed was spotted by officers in the town centre on January 3.
A spokesperson for Barnsley Central Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “A foot chase ensued and the male was detained a short distance later.
“The male managed to keep hold of his large shopping bag during the chase, albeit he hadn’t paid for the items contained within it.”
He was subsequently charged with three shoplifting offences and a breach of a suspended sentence order.
Gotobed was remanded into custody and appeared at Barnsley Magistrates’ Court on January 4 and was sentenced to 12 weeks imprisonment for the offences.
