HUNDREDS of fish were released into the river at Low Barugh this week to boost stocks.

The Environment Agency put 500 Grayling into the River Dearne on Tuesday at a point off Dearne Hall Road.

Fisheries specialist Peter Mischenko said the exercise will further improve ecology of the region's rivers as well as give anglers more opportunities.

“Grayling are native to the River Aire, Don and Dearne and we want to see their numbers increase in the area.

“Because these rivers are healthier and water quality has improved, they are an ideal place to release the fish to further improve the ecology.”

About 4,000 Grayling were brought from the agency’s fish farm in Nottingham and released at various points in the region.

A further 500 fish were put into the River Dearne at Bretton Hall, 2,000 in the River Aire and 1,000 in the River Don.

The exercise was part of a three-year programme which targets rivers and stillwaters that would benefit most from restocking.

The agency said Grayling are a very pollution sensitive species, but quality of the rivers had improved enough for restocking to take place.

Improved water conditions in the region have recently been seen at the River Don, where a 11lb salmon was caught by the fisheries survey team last month.
