Barnsley star Kenny Doughty has returned to the nation's television screens in the second series of comedy Stella.

Kenny, 37, plays Sean in the hit Sky One show written by, and starring, former Gavin and Stacey actress Ruth Jones.

It is about the lives of Stella and Sean and their relationship, which was rocked in series one when Stella's first love Rob reappeared.

The second series started last Friday and follows on from Ruth's confession she was pregnant at the end of series one, but was unsure if Sean or Rob was the father.

Kenny said it was a lot of fun filming with Ruth, who he described as 'absolutely gorgeous', adding: "We've got a wonderful cast and there is a lot of love for Ruth.

"Everyone was excited about what she would be doing after Gavin and Stacey so I'm lucky to be given such a great part."

Kenny landed the role after sending Ruth a tape because he was abroad filming. She called him up and they had a two hour chat.

He recalled: "I was in Belgium and so couldn't meet Ruth, but she called me up and said the tape was fantastic. She was telling me about the episode when Sean and Stella kiss when my phone went dead.

"She said she thought I'd put the phone down because she said they kiss!"

The series was shot over six months in Wales and has been commissioned for a third series and a Christmas special. But Kenny isn't giving much away about what happens between the pair in the future.

He joked: "I'd better not say if I ever want to work again!"

Kenny is currently rehearsing for The Full Monty at the Lyceum in Sheffield and has two films, The Snowpiercer and The Strange Case of Wilhelm Reich, which are both due for release in the summer.
