A YOUNG aspiring politician who snatched defeat from the jaws of victory has vowed to keep fighting for his local community despite not winning the election he fought.

Jake Lodge - just 20 years old - has launched a petition calling for improvement of an overgrown and derelict piece of land near his home on Bank End.

He would have been Barnsley Council’s youngest councillor had he won the seat he contested for Labour in the Worsbrough Ward at May’s local elections, but he came 89 votes short of defeating long-serving Barnsley Independent councillor Gill Carr.

“I was a candidate at the local elections, and although I lost, I did promise people I wouldn’t just disappear and I’d continue to make a difference afterwards. I’ve launched this petition and I’ve already got 100 signatures.”
