ASYLUM seekers and refugees escaping violence and persecution in their own countries could be dispersed in to Barnsley.

Church Action Poverty, a Christian charity, is spearheading a campaign to get Barnsley recognised as a City Of Sanctuary.

Mike Cameron, of CAP, said: "Barnsley has always been good when people from other countries have come here. If we look back in to the history of Barnsley, which is one of the things we are going to do at our meeting, people will be reminded of the Polish people, Romanian people and others who have come here in years gone by and always found a home here in Barnsley.

"It is amazing how many people have come into this country before it became a political hotcake. Immigration and people fleeing from authority has been regular throughout the years and people have made them welcome."
