THE BARNSLEY branch of the Royal Bank of Scotland will close at the end of August with bosses claiming the number of customers who go in at least once a week is less than 40.

A spokesman said the decision had been because more people are choosing to bank online.

He said since 2012, the way in which people use Barnsley branch had changed, with 75 per cent of customers already banking in other ways locally. Transactions at Barnsley have reduced by 49 per cent since 2012 and only 38 customers now visit the branch on a regular weekly basis.

Technology has been developed so RBS customers can use NatWest branches for everyday banking, such as withdrawing cash, checking balances or paying in (and vice versa).

Personal and business customers will be able to access a range of services at either an RBS or NatWest branch, including payments, international services, account detail changes and mandates.

RBS will dedicate members of staff to nearby NatWest branches to offer assistance.
