The Cumbrians took the lead midway through the first half after an error by debutant Aapo Halme then the same player conceded a penalty for the second goal early in the second half, before another followed five minutes later.
The margin of victory could have been greater for the away side who made the Reds pay for a lacklustre and error-strewn performance.
Daniel Stendel made seven changes from the side that lost at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday. Brad Collins and Halme made their debuts, Callum Styles and Conor Chaplin started for the Reds for the first time while Jordan Williams, Dani Pinillos and Mamadou Thiam started for the first time this season.
Visiting goalkeeper Adam Collin was tested three times in the first five minutes, comfortably catching low long-range efforts by Thiam and Styles and diving to his right to repel a Cauley Woodrow 12-yard effort from the right of the box. Woodrow then had another effort easily stopped from the just outside the box.
The visitors began creating chances after a quiet first 15 minutes, starting with Harry McKirdy forcing Brad Collins into a save from a tight angle on the left. Ryan Loft was then put clean through and denied by a good one-on-one save then Nathan Thomas latched onto a cross field ball on the right of the box and forced another impressive stop out of Collins who, seconds later, brilliantly pushed over McKirdy’s deflected rebound.
The Cumbrians eventually made the breakthrough on 25 minutes through a terrible mistake by Halme who jumped over a pass from one of his team-mates which put McKirdy clean through to score.
Conor Chaplin nearly levelled with a powerful 12-yard strike following a corner which was well tipped over by Collin. The visitors almost doubled their lead in bizarre fashion when Loft, on the floor after tussling for the ball, took advantage of a bad Cameron McGeehan touch by volleying the ball 20 yards out with his back on the floor and the effort went inches over.
Chaplin had another chance just before the break when he was put through on goal by a poor McKirdie backpass and rounded the goalkeeper but, with the open net gaping, he hesitated on the right of the six-yard box and allowed defenders to block his effort then Jordan Williams’ rebound was cleared off the line.
The visitors doubled their lead just before the hour-mark when McKirdy was allowed to run unchecked into the box from the left wing and was pushed over by Halme for a clear penalty which was tucked away by Jack Bridge.
Woodrow almost pulled one back when his flicked header from a Williams cross hit the near post. But the visitors got the next goal on 63 minutes when Styles lost the ball just outside his box after struggling to control a poor McGeehan pass and was robbed by Nathan Thomas who went clean through to score.
It was almost 4-0 on 88 minutes when Stefan Scougall went clean through following a good move and a Hallam Hope pass. His shot beat Collins but rolled against the inside of the post and was cleared.
