BARNSLEY footballers have joined a push to help the town catch up with the rest of South Yorkshire in a drive to help keep children safe.

The NSPCC operates a Speak Out, Stay Safe initiative, using volunteers to speak to school children about abuse, the forms it takes and how they can speak out to raise their concerns.

It relies on volunteers to visit schools and address assemblies, with more than 26,000 youngsters hearing the message over the last year across the county.

But the NSPCC say those numbers would increase significantly if there were more volunteers active in the Barnsley district.

So they called on Barnsley FC first team members to promote the initiative.
