BARNSLEY'S Ethel Lang, who at 114 was the country's oldest person, has died.

Mrs Lang, who was born in Worsbrough in 1900, died at Water Royd House Nursing Home in Gilroyd on Thursday morning.

She saw six monarchs and 22 Prime Ministers and as the youngest daughter of miner Charles Lancaster and his wife Sarah, she was born when the Marquess of Salisbury was Prime Minister.

She lived in Barnsley all her life, in Monk Bretton and Carlton, and left school at 13 to go and work at a shirt factory.
