A COMMUNITY group focusing on men’s welfare has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award for its services.

Men In Sheds is a project run by Age UK Barnsley for men over the age of 50.

Malcolm Poskitt, project co-ordinator, said the scheme is important to stop social isolation and there is a great need for projects like this one.

He said: “We were really pleased when we heard we had been nominated because it is an important service.

“The service is used by Barnsley men aged 50 and above and is just one of many services Age UK Barnsley offer.

“There is a great need for places, just for men, to be comfortable as they are, to get company, do different things and mix with others.”

Malcolm explained that there are around 135 men who are members of the service and can be upwards of 15 men visiting the facility every day.

He said: “There is no pressure for men to do anything, if they just want to come and pop for a cuppa they are more than welcome to.

“It’s a place where work never interferes with the tea breaks.”

The men have the opportunity to chat over tea and biscuits whilst learning new skills such as woodworking, IT, art and sport.

Alec Olsen, of Age UK Barnsley, said: “It’s an opportunity to get out and about and get involved in something new and different and continue to be happy and enjoy life as it should be. Members have said things like: “It puts fun and laughter back into life and it’s better than daytime TV or nodding off in my chair.”

The shed is based off Sumner Lane in the The Newburgh Building (Ground floor).

It is open Monday to Friday 10am until 4pm every week of the year except Christmas.
