ALMOST £5,000 was lost by the council after it was forced to cancel the Christmas lights switch-on last month due to bad weather.

Visitors were expecting singing and entertainment fromÊprincesses and super heroes, an appearance by Henry Gallagher from the recent series of Britain’s Got Talent, followed by the switching on of the lights at the annual crowd pleaser.

It was due to take place on November 18 but had to be abandoned with just hours to go because of fears for public safety because of strong winds.

Figures obtained by the Chronicle show that should the event have taken place, the total cost would have been £14,978, but it managed to salvage the bulk of this.
