A MAJOR crackdown is planned to tackle a surge in antisocial behaviour blighting Barnsley town centre and outlying residential areas.

Council bosses are expected to give the go ahead to begin consultation for a public space protection order to be brought in across the whole of the town centre and residential streets off Park Road, Sheffield Road, Cemetery Road and Doncaster Road. It would also cover streets between Harborough Hill Road and Old Mill Lane and Summer Lane and Victoria Road.

A public space protection order (PSPO) is a tough new law designed to equip local councils with the powers to tackle yobbish incidents, making it a criminal offence to behave in a way that ‘causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to any other person’.
