A THIEF went to extraordinary lengths to steal from a Wombwell shop last week, breaking in through the roof of a empty building next door and chiselling through the adjoining wall.

Wombwell Wine, on the High Street, was entered through the wall behind the cigarette counter and had £1,500 stolen from the till and cigarettes taken at about 6.15am on Wednesday last week.

Owner Magesh Saravanmuthu was alerted to the robbery by the alarm and CCTV, which are linked directly to his phone.

Magesh said: "Nobody can believe it when I tell them. The shop alarm went off as soon as the burglar put his head inside. I checked my phone and saw someone taking the cigs.

"When the police pulled up front, I was saying 'go back, go back', I could see him climbing back through to the building next door."

Magesh said the thief entered the empty Superdrug building next door through the roof, used a rope to get down and then began to work on breaking through the shop wall.

Anyone with information about the theft should contact South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 116 of December 10.
