BARNSLEY goes to the polls in May for the local elections and the deadline for registering to vote is next month.
In order to vote in the election, residents must be on the electoral register. Barnsley Council is urging households that have not registered at their current address to make sure they are registered in time.
The deadline is midnight on Tuesday, April 17. Anyone can apply online at gov.uk/register-to-vote. It takes about five minutes to complete.
Peter Clark, Barnsley Council’s elections manager, said: “These elections are an opportunity to make your voice heard and have a say on who represents you on issues that directly affect day-to-day life here in Barnsley. But if you’re not registered by April 17, you won’t be able to vote.
“If you have turned 18, or if you have moved home recently, it’s particularly important that you act to ensure that you are registered. It takes just five minutes online and means that you can take part in this important election.”
People eligible to vote in last year’s general election and whose details have not changed will still be registered to vote. Residents can check their details by calling the elections helpline on 773070.
