A WOMAN has told of a dramatic attempt to rescue a couple from a house fire in Elsecar.

Katherine Collard, 55, and Erwin Albers, 62, died in the blaze at their home on Cherry Tree Street on Tuesday.

Marie Suter, also of Cherry Tree Street, her husband Paul and other neighbours broke into the house but were beaten back by flames and smoke.

Marie, 49, said: "The fire was in the back bedroom and they (the couple) were in the bathroom. I don't think they could get out.

"The men were able to get to the top of the stairs but no further. Nobody managed to get to them, the fumes were too much."
