DRIVERS have been condemned by South Yorkshire Police for swearing at emergency service workers while dealing with an motorway smash near Barnsley.

An overturned Ford Transit van led to the closure of the motorway between junctions 37 and 38 of the M1 on Wednesday at around 8pm.

Motorists caught in traffic following the collision are said to have sworn and used ‘other offensive language’ at the emergency services dealing with the aftermath.

Traffic officers said that they got traffic moving as soon as they could but a large amount of diesel and vehicle debris meant they could not open lanes two and three as it ‘would have made it dangerous for vehicles to drive through’.

South Yorkshire Police took to social media to address the foul language and said: “There was no need for a few motorists to swear and use other offensive language at the emergency services for making them a little late.

“If this was you, just think it may be you in this situation one day and you’ll welcome the sounds and sights of the police, ambulance and fire service.”

Highways England Tweeted that the entire carriageway had reopened by 11pm.
