AN MP has criticised local spending on mental health saying it is failing the most vulnerable in society.

Michael Dugher is demanding more money be spent on mental health care and improved training for Barnsley GPs and nurses after what he describes as “alarming” figures.

Mr Dugher, MP for Barnsley East, has called on Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to act after it was revealed just one in three (32 per cent) of trainee GPs in his constituency had a training placement that gave them mental health experience in 2015.

The local figures, from mental health charity Mind, are well below the national average of 46 per cent.
